Dear dear Iskra, Of the 1000 times I have been amazed by you, your art, your writing, and..I have never written, today I will send a quote from Lucy Lippard’s *The Lure of the Local *: (after I just read your blog about Place)

“Inherent in the local is the concept of place — a portion of land/town/cityscape seen from the inside, the resonance of a specific location that is known and familiar. Most often place applies to our own “local” – entwined with personal memory, known or unknown histories, marks made in the land that provoke and evoke. Place in latitudinal and longitudinal within the map of a person’s life. It is temporal and spatial, personal and political. A layered location replete with human histories and memories, place has width as well as depth. It is about connections, what surrounds it, what formed it, what happened there, what will happen there.”

This quote, this chapter of her book, made me sob in graduate school, as it recalled my loss of losing my land and home, it made clear and named in print, why I do what I do…my art is about place and space, memory, landscape..all of it. You named it again in your blog…thank you for a brilliantly written personal story!

I have to make a salad for my dinner, but before I do that, you are an extraordinary woman, with so many aspects in your repertoire of talent … I am amazed, and I just want to write that. I hope to sit down in the near future and acknowledge you when I see or read some Iskra stuff. You are prolific and special…I’m envious of your production and your care of whatever surrounds you…

for now, I’m sending love and appreciation, Barbara

Barbara, What a wonderful comment to see here. This Lucy Lippard quote is a marvel, and I see why it affected you so deeply– it may immobilize me as she apparently said all that needs to be said years ago! I will do my best to recover, and may use part of this as an intro to coming pieces. Thank you! Heading east in the fall for a culture and friends reunion, perhaps someday I will see your work and you in person!
